Nutrition tracking: a diary, your goals and the weekly pattern

The tracker is a food diary with arithmetic. Each entry stores calories, protein, carbs and fat, the day view sums them and compares them with your goals, and the progress charts show how weeks compare.

What the diary stores

  • Every entry with its calories, protein, carbs and fat.
  • Meal type: breakfast, lunch, dinner or snack.
  • Fiber, sugar and sodium where the food data or the photo analysis provides them.
  • A calendar of days, marked when a day landed close to the goal.

A worked example: a week of totals

This table is a week of our free 1500 kcal high-protein plan, entered into the diary as a plan would be. The goal is 1500 kcal a day, and the last column is the difference the day view would show.

Read the protein column first. It ranges from 120 g to 141 g, and the weekly average is 132 g. A day view that only showed calories would hide that spread.

Goals and progress

Goals come from your profile, and you can change any of them by hand. The day view compares the log with them, and the progress page turns the diary into charts over time, so a slow trend is visible before it becomes a surprise.

You can add entries by typing, by photo, by barcode, or by exporting the meals of a saved plan into the diary for the days you pick.

Reading the weekly pattern

One day of logging tells you little. A week tells you a lot. Look at the average calories against the goal, how many days landed close to it, and where protein fell short.

Most people find the pattern is specific. Protein is low at breakfast, or calories jump at the weekend. That is the part to change, and it is easier than changing a whole diet.

Setting goals you can keep

  • Calories: start from the estimate in your profile and give it two to three weeks before you change it.
  • Protein: pick a value from a published range for your weight, and raise it only after you have hit it for two weeks.
  • Carbs and fat: let them fill the remaining calories, or set them by hand if you follow a specific diet type.

What it does not do

The tracker does not judge your diet or give medical advice. A goal is a number you chose, and the log measures against it. For anything to do with a health condition or medication, ask a doctor or a registered dietitian.
