Feature: shopping list

A shopping list built from the meal plan

A plan is only useful if you can shop for it. Mealyno reads the ingredients of every meal in the plan, merges duplicates, adds up quantities and groups the result by category. Below is a real list from one of our free plans.

A real list: 1600 kcal vegan plan

This is the list of our free 1600 kcal vegan plan for seven days. It has 29 items in 4 groups.

  • Falafel8 pieces

Pantry

  • Canned Chickpeas1.2 kg

Two things show up in a good list. Quantities are already added across days, so you see 1.2 kg of canned chickpeas on one line instead of seven separate lines. And the groups follow a store: protein, dairy, produce, pantry.

What the app does with it

  • Builds the list from any saved plan.
  • Merges duplicate ingredients and adds up the amounts.
  • Groups items by category.
  • Lets you check items off as you shop, and edit or add your own.
  • Keeps saved lists so a week you liked can be bought again.

Shopping for one week

Start with proteins and pantry items, since they set the week. Then check what you already own, because a list built from a plan does not know your cupboard. Produce goes last and closest to the day you cook, because vegetables are the item most often thrown away.

If you cook for two, double the proteins and grains and keep produce closer to the original amounts.

Reading the list

Each line is an ingredient with a quantity for the whole plan. Proteins and dairy set the week, and grains and pantry items follow. Produce is the group to watch, because it spoils first.

If a line does not fit your kitchen, swap it for something equivalent and keep the quantity. Chicken breast and turkey breast are interchangeable, and so are rice and quinoa.

Shopping list questions

Can I edit the list?
Yes. You can check items off, edit lines and add your own items.
Are duplicates merged?
Yes. The same ingredient used in several meals appears once, with the quantities added up.
Can I build a list for a plan I saved earlier?
Yes. The list is generated from any saved plan, and saved lists can be reused.

What it does not do

The list follows the plan, and the plan uses model estimates. Quantities are a guide. If you manage an allergy, read labels instead of relying on any list.
