How Many Calories Should a Child Eat? By Age and Sex

Reference calories and protein for children aged 2 to 17, by age band and sex, are in the chart below, followed by the split of the day into meals. Use them to plan meals; a pediatrician judges an individual child.

Calorie chart by age and sex

The 14 to 17 band is the first with a clear sex difference: about 600 kcal a day between the girls' and boys' midpoints, and protein of 46 g and 52 g.

Where the numbers come from

Energy values are the estimated calorie needs per day from the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2020 to 2025 (USDA and HHS, Appendix 2), for a child who is moderately active, taken at the middle of each published range. Protein values are the Recommended Dietary Allowance from the Dietary Reference Intakes (Appendix 1): 13 g for ages 1 to 3, 19 g for 4 to 8, 34 g for 9 to 13 and, for 14 to 18, 46 g for girls and 52 g for boys. They are population reference values, not a prescription for one child.

How a child's day splits into meals

Mealyno splits the day into 30 % breakfast, 35 % lunch and 35 % dinner, and every snack is 10 % of the day, taken proportionally from the three main meals. These are the same shares the household planner uses for adults. The table uses the mean of the girls' and boys' values.

kcal, rounded. Mean of both sexes. The first three meal columns are for a day with no snacks; with 2 snacks, breakfast drops to 24 % and lunch and dinner to 28 % each.

Reading the table without over-reading it

A 4 to 8 year old at 1,500 kcal and a 14 to 17 year old boy at 2,600 kcal are far apart, and inside each band children differ a lot. Appetite follows growth spurts, sleep and activity from week to week, so a child who eats little at one meal and a lot at the next is usually behaving normally. Treat the values as the middle of a range, and let a pediatrician judge an individual child's growth.

Activity matters: a sedentary child needs less than the middle value and a very active one more. The table assumes moderate activity and does not account for illness, a medical condition or a growth concern.

How the household planner uses these numbers

A child is added to a household by age band only, with an optional sex. There is no weight, no height and no goal. The planner reads the table above, never applies a deficit and never offers a weight-loss mode for a child. The child's portion of a shared dish is scaled to their meal target, so a 4 to 8 year old gets a smaller plate of the same dinner the adults eat.

What this page does not cover

It does not cover babies and children under 2, who need individual guidance from a pediatrician, nor adults, for whom Mealyno uses a separate calculation from height, weight, age and activity. It is not a diagnosis and it does not tell you whether a child is underweight or overweight. Never put a child on a weight-loss plan without a doctor. Mealyno plans are general information, not medical advice.

Questions

How many calories does a 5 year old need?

The Dietary Guidelines list about 1,400 kcal a day for a moderately active 5-year-old, and 1,400 to 1,600 across the 4 to 8 band depending on age and sex. Mealyno uses 1,500 kcal as the band value, with 19 g of protein. Individual needs vary with growth and activity.

How many calories should a 15 year old boy eat?

A 15 year old is in the 14 to 17 band: about 2,600 kcal a day for a moderately active boy, with 52 g of protein. Very active teenagers need more.

How many calories should a 9 year old boy eat?

A 9 year old boy falls in the 9 to 13 band of the chart. The chart value for boys in that band is 2,000 kcal a day (1,800 for girls) with 34 g of protein: the middle of the published range for a moderately active child in the band. The exact need at age 9 shifts with growth spurts and activity.

How many calories does an 8 year old need?

An 8 year old falls in the 4 to 8 band of the chart. The chart value for that band is 1,500 kcal a day with 19 g of protein, the same for boys and girls: the middle of the published range for a moderately active child in the band. The exact need at age 8 varies with growth and activity, so a very active child needs more and a sedentary one less.

How many calories should a 4 year old eat?

A 4 year old is in the 4 to 8 band, so Mealyno uses 1,500 kcal a day with 19 g of protein. Treat it as the middle of a range: individual needs vary with growth and activity.

Should I count my child's calories?

Usually not. Offer regular meals and snacks and let appetite guide the amount. Use the table only to size shared portions, and ask a pediatrician if you have a concern about growth or eating.

Do girls and boys need different amounts?

A little at first and more with age. The midpoints differ by 100 kcal at 2 to 3, are equal at 4 to 8, differ by 200 kcal at 9 to 13 and by 600 kcal at 14 to 17. Protein is the same until 14.

Does Mealyno restrict a child's calories?

No. A child is added by age band, gets reference values from this table, and is never put on a deficit.
